NMSU radio DJ receives national recognition
Kylie Arrieta, music director of KRUX-FM, New Mexico State University's student-run radio station, received national recognition at the College Music Journal Radio Marathon in New York City last month, taking the "Best Taste in Music" nomination.
Arrieta, a two-year nominee veteran to the five-day college radio conference and music festival, joined nearly 100 college DJs in determining the best of the best in various radio and music based categories.
"She was among five people nominated for the award and that's quite an honor for our station," said Jeffrey Hand, student media adviser for KRUX 91.5 FM. "The students here take it seriously and want to compete in the music industry."
Staff members from the radio station have been attending the conferences at CMJ for the last six years.
"CMJ provides an avenue for the student leadership here to chart songs that CMJ follows throughout the country and through college radio stations," Hand said.
The conference events include round tables, radio panels, speakers from the recording and entertainment industry and a music festival. Some key speakers included Alex Kisch, senior vice president, business development & business affairs for VEVO; Bill Werde, editorial director for Billboard; and David Marchese, senior editor for Spin Magazine.
"CMJ really brings you closer to the business aspect of music," Arrieta said. "You get to understand the professional side a lot better."
Arrieta, who has worked at KRUX for the last three years, called the station the best thing she's done in her college career.
"One thing that I love is culture and definitely music, so to come here and be exposed to the diversity that comes through the station is so rewarding, fulfilling and inspiring," Arrieta said. "I've learned valuable communication; we've maximized our time and are more efficient in what works for us."
