The New Mexico State University rodeo team finished the fall season with several wins, including men's team, women's team and men's all-around, and the men extended their lead in the region after their recent rodeo in Tucumcari, N.M.

"We had a stellar rodeo in this past weekend," said Jim Brown, NMSU rodeo coach. "The team solidified standings in top spots in all events. As we prepare for a long break before next semester's rodeos, we will continue practicing and healing up some injuries."

During the final rodeo, NMSU held top spots in bareback riding, breakaway, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing and team roping.

The men did well both days in bareback riding; Trenten Montero took home first place overall over the weekend.

In tie-down the men held top spots overall. Victor Ugalde took home first place, Pacen Marez took home third and Ethan Shelley took fourth. Shelley was also men's all around over the weekend.

The men also did well in team roping. Cody Mirabal and Reno Eddy took home second place overall and Shelley and Cody Runyan took home third overall. Other wins for the men include Tyke Kipp, who took second overall in steer wrestling.

The women also did well over the weekend and held top spots in breakaway and barrel racing.

In breakaway Kellie Wiersma took home first place overall, Shelby Montano took second place overall and Nicole Sweazea took fourth. In barrel racing, NaLynn Cline took home first place overall and Meghan Johnson took home third overall.

The women are ranked fourth in the region and the men are in first place. Several members of the NMSU rodeo team also hold top spots in the region.

NMSU Rodeo will be at the Frank DuBois Bronc Riding and Tie-Down Roping, and the Wild Ride Oct. 25-26. The next season for the NMSU rodeo teams will be March 2014.
