New Mexico State University advanced in the Washington Monthly National Universities rankings for a fourth consecutive year.

NMSU has jumped to a ranking of 73, up from 102 in 2012. NMSU's rank in 2011 was 149.

Washington Monthly rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories - social mobility, research and service.

NMSU takes pride in its service to the citizens of New Mexico, the United States and the world. Part of Washington Monthly's service ranking is based on the percentage of students who serve in Reserve Officer Training Corps programs at universities; NMSU has both Army and Air Force ROTC. The service rating also considers the percentage of alumni who go on to serve in the Peace Corps, relative to school size. NMSU currently has seven alumni serving in the field with the Peace Corps in the following countries: Cameroon, Eastern Caribbean, Gambia, Liberia, Philippines, Uganda and Ukraine. They are serving in the sectors of education, community economic development and youth in development. Since 1961, 248 Aggies have served in the Peace Corps.
