MUSIC DEPARTMENT HOSTS DONA ANA LYRIC OPERA
The New Mexico State University Department of Music will host the Dona Ana Lyric Opera's presentation of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Trial by Jury" and Henry Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20, and again at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at the Atkinson Recital Hall.
FREE "APPS FOR YOUR DEGREE" STUDENT TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP
The Barnes & Noble at NMSU Bookstore & Cafe will host a free student technology workshop titled, "Apps for Your Degree," at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 23. Barnes & Noble is located at 1400 E. CLABS HOSTS LECURE ON DIVORCE IN THE MEXICAN FRONTIER
The Center for Latin American and Border Studies will host a lecture with Jamie Starling, assistant professor at NMSU, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at the Nason House titled "'From the Moment That I Made My Wedding Vows My Suffering Began': A Divorce in the Mexican Frontier, 1823-1838." This lecture is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The Nason House is at 1070 University Avenue, across the street from FedEx/Kinkos.
Sterling will discuss how in 1831, Bárbara Aguirre denounced her husband, Francisco Belarde, to the municipal government of Paso del Norte for physical abuse, alcoholism and forced labor. In response, Belarde denounced his wife for committing adultery and disturbing the patriarchal order. Aguirre's complaint began a two-year separation case that involved civil and church authorities in the Mexican frontier. In the course of this legal process, these estranged spouses, various witnesses from the community and local officials aired ideas concerning marital obligations, social class, and public propriety in legal testimony. This case illustrates the social history of northern Mexico during the early years of independence, the hardships that victims of abuse faced in the 19th century borderlands and the civil rights that women asserted in early republican Mexico.
AGGIE ATHLETICS PRESENTS SOFTBALL, BASEBALL
Aggie Softball will face Seattle University at 6 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the NMSU Softball Complex. It is the Senior Weekend, and admission is free for children age 12 and under.
Baseball will face the University of Texas at Arlington at 6:05 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the Presley Askew Baseball Field. Admission is free for children age 12 and under.
