New Mexico State University events April 13-19
NMSU HOSTS JAZZ FESTIVAL
New Mexico State University Jazz Ensembles will host the 44th Annual New Mexico State University Jazz Festival April 11 and 12. High School and Middle School jazz ensembles from throughout New Mexico and El Paso will perform during the two-day event. Each performance will be followed by a clinic given by a panel of three festival adjudicator/clinicians offering suggestions for improvement.
Ensembles begin performances at 9:30 a.m. and conclude with an awards presentation at 5 p.m., on Thursday April 11. Friday's activities began at 9:30 a.m. and the day concludes with the festival concert at 7:30 p.m, featuring festival artists Monika Herzig, Tom Fowler and Frank Otero. All activities are free and open to the public.
MASTER YOUR IPAD WORKSHOP AT BARNES AND NOBLE
The Barnes & Noble at NMSU Bookstore & Cafe will host the final public workshop of the semester at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, titled "Master Your iPad - Advanced Features." UNIVERSITY MUSEUM HOSTS AMERICAN INDIAN WEEK CONCLUSION
The University Museum will host the final day of NMSU American Indian Week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13, with a Native American arts and craft expo and musical performance by Randy Granger.
CLABS HOSTS CHICANO LITERARY LECURE
The Center for Latin American and Border Studies will host Jesus Rosales, associate professor of Spanish, Chicano literature from Arizona State University, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at the Nason House. Rosales will discuss "Chicano Literary Journals in Spanish: Creating Cultural Bridges in the U.S. /Mexico Border," about the importance that Chicano literary journals–specifically those that publish in Spanish–have in U.S./Mexico border culture. With this in mind, the speaker will highlight three journals: La Palabra: Revista de literatura chicana; Ventana Abierta: Revista latina de literatura, arte y cultura; and Puentes: Revista mexico-chicana de literatura, cultura y arte.
This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The Nason House is located at 1070 University Avenue, across from Kinko's/FedEx.
UNIVERSITY MUSEUM HOSTS TWO LECTURES
Christine Eber, NMSU professor emerita of anthropology, will reflect on insights she acquired on a recent trip to Chiapas where she met with Maya youth, weavers and farmers from Tzotzil, Tzeltal, and Chuj communities in the state at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the University Museum. She will provide updates on the lives of several of the weavers, whose photos and textiles are featured in the exhibit "Weaving Solidarity: Textile Traditions of Highland Chiapas"
Katherine Osburn, professor of history at Arizona State University will host "Dear Friend and Ex-Husband: Marriage, Divorce and Women's Property Rights on the Southern Ute Reservation, 1887 - 1934" at 6 p.m. Friday April 19, at the University Museum.
DANCESPORT COMPANY PRESENTS RHYTHM NIGHTS
Join NMSU DanceSport Company for its annual spring show at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday April 19 and 20, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at NMSU's Rentfrow Gym. "Rhythm Nights-The Spectrum of Love" is a feature length dance production that will take you on a colorful journey through the seven stages of love. Also, enjoy a one-hour complementary dance party immediately following the performance.
General admission, table seating and preferred eight-person table reservations are available for advance purchase before April 17. General admission is $8, table seating $10, and preferred table for eight is $80 with advanced purchase, and general admission and table seating are $10 and $12, respectively, at the door. AGGIE ATHLETICS PRESENTS SOFTBALL, BASEBALL, TENNIS
Aggie Softball will face the University of Texas at San Antonio at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the NMSU Softball Complex. Admission is free for children age 12 and under.
Baseball will face the Sacramento State at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, April 13, and again at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at the Presley Askew Baseball Field. Admission is free for children age 12 and under.
Women's Tennis will face the University of Denver at San Antonio at 10 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at the NMSU Tennis Complex. Admission is free and open to the public.
