Denise Welsh, director of Instructional Media Services at New Mexico State University, has been selected to receive the 2012 Stephen W. and Robert E. Roberts Memorial Staff Award.

"I feel honored to have been nominated," Welsh said. "I'm very pleased to be here at NMSU. It's a great institution and working in education for 38 years has been very rewarding."

Welsh will be presented with a plaque and a $1,500 award during a ceremony at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Milton Hall Teaching Academy, Room 50. The ceremony will be open to the public.

The Roberts Memorial Staff Award is presented annually to a staff member who has made a contribution to university life and demonstrated dedication and outstanding service to the community.

Welsh has worked at NMSU since 1984, after coming from El Paso Community College. She became director of Instructional Media Services in 2004. As director, Welsh assists college deans and department heads in choosing the best method for their distance education courses. She also finds ways to establish remote sites to offer these courses to students in New Mexico and around the world.

"Denise is so deserving of this award," said Bobbie Derlin, NMSU associate provost. "Her motivation, dedication, service and caring for the NMSU and Las Cruces communities is truly commendable."

In addition, Welsh is the vice president of the Southwest Theater Company, president-elect of the NMSU Pioneers, a member of the NMSU Benefit Advisory Committee and continues to take classes at NMSU.

The Roberts Memorial Staff Award was established in 1983 in memory of Stephen W. and Robert E. Roberts, sons of former NMSU Business Affairs Vice President George W. Roberts and his wife, Bernice. Stephen, a 1974 NMSU graduate, and Robert, a NMSU student at the time, were killed in an automobile accident in 1978. The award is made possible through donations of the Roberts' family and friends.
