Ambassador to address the 'Arab Spring,' 'Arab Winter'
The former U.S. diplomat served as the ambassador to Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe from 1992-1995. He is best known for his service during the Bush administration when he traveled to Niger in 2002 to investigate allegations that Saddam Hussein was attempting to purchase uranium. Wilson was the last American diplomat to ever meet with Hussein.
"Twenty months into the political upheavals sweeping through the Middle East and North Africa, it is evident the 'Arab Spring' label may have been mistaken or premature," said Yosef Lapid, a Regents Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences. "As the 'Arab Spring' shows signs of degenerating into an Arab/Islamic 'winter' there is a need to engage in honest reflection and discussion regarding implications for U.S. foreign policy in this vital yet increasingly volatile region."
Wilson is expected to speak for about 40 minutes before answering questions from two moderators. An audience question and answer period will follow.
