NMSU to host free Rancher's Roundtable on ranch economics in Corona Oct. 10
The roundtable will be held at the Southwest Center for Rangeland Sustainability. The discussion is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon.
"This roundtable will give participants the opportunity to learn more about the financial side of their operation," said Shad Cox, ranch manager of NMSU's Corona Range and Livestock Research Center. "Examples of recordkeeping, budgeting and cost analysis will be presented. Further discussion will be on tap to explain tax consequences with examples and description of unique opportunities in agriculture when it comes to yearly tax planning, especially due to drought conditions."
Jerry Hawkes, NMSU range livestock economist, and Patrick Sullivan, with NMSU's agricultural business management, will serve on the panel of speakers. Eric Scholljegerdes, a range nutritionist with NMSU, will serve as moderator.
Hawkes and Sullivan will be able to answer a variety of questions, from budgets to depreciation, and from taxes to software.
The Rancher's Roundtable Series is by design participant-driven in direction and content and will take its shape from the questions that are presented. They are designed to help producers deal with the daily challenges they face with their range and herds. Other topics to be addressed throughout the year include: heifer development, marketing, range management and brush control.
