Jonathan Schwartz, head of the New Mexico State University Counseling and Educational Psychology Department in the College of Education, has been named as a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 17, the Society of Counseling Psychologists.

Fellow status is an honor bestowed upon APA members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology. Schwartz was nominated, and after submitting the required materials to be confirmed, was granted fellow status.

"This helps bring national recognition to our department," Schwartz said.

This is the third big APA recognition of NMSU faculty this year. Schwartz was elected to be president-elect of Division 51 of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity, earlier this year, and takes his president-elect post this month. Luis Vazquez, NMSU's associate vice president for research integrity, begins his term as president of Division 45 of the APA, the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues, this month, too.

"College of Education faculty at NMSU continue to be leaders in their particular disciplines at the state, regional and national level. Dr. Schwartz's selection as a fellow is one more example of this," said Michael Morehead, dean of the NMSU College of Education. "Dr. Schwartz is an outstanding academic leader and this recognition verifies his significant impact on the profession."
