NMSU moves up in Washington Monthly 2012 National Universities rankings
In 2011, NMSU was ranked 149 overall in Washington Monthly's rankings, which are based on schools' contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and service. NMSU's ranking improved to 102 for 2012.
NMSU takes pride in its service to the citizens of New Mexico, the United States and the world. Part of Washington Monthly's service ranking is based on the percentage of students who serve in Reserve Officer Training Corps programs at universities. NMSU has both Army and Air Force ROTC, with a total of close to 100 students enrolled in each program.
The service rating also considers the percentage of alumni who go on to serve in the Peace Corps, relative to school size. NMSU currently has 10 alumni serving in the field with the Peace Corps in the following countries: Belize, Cameroon, China, Costa Rica, Eastern Caribbean, Mongolia, Paraguay, Philippines, Uganda and Ukraine.
Contributing to the move up in rankings is the increase in NMSU's research expenditures, from $138 million in 2011, to $158 million in 2012.
