NMSU College of Education online graduate programs ranked among the best in the U.S.

Three graduate programs in New Mexico State University’s College of Education have been recognized by educational ranking websites as being among the best in the nation.

The programs in Early Childhood Education, Educational Leadership and Administration, and Curriculum and Instruction have been recognized for helping graduate students develop skills to enact change in educational settings.

The website ranked the Early Childhood master’s program at NMSU as 19 out of 50 programs reviewed.

NMSU “provides students with advanced studies to improve their knowledge and skills in early childhood education,” the site states. “This program prepares students for advanced practice in teacher education and gives them the skills to work with families, program management and other areas related to early childhood development.”

The doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction at NMSU was ranked seventh by website for doctorates in education with a focus on Curriculum and Instruction.

“Designed for mid-career professionals, the program prepares students with the advanced knowledge necessary to pursue a variety of upper-level careers in education,” the site states regarding NMSU’s ranking. “The doctoral students in the Curriculum and Instruction program not only take courses online they become part of the NMSU community by attending courses on campus for two weeks each summer.”

The Curriculum and Instruction online doctoral program has been at NMSU since 2004, before online education was as accessible as it is how, said online doctoral program director and NMSU Curriculum and Instruction associate professor David Rutledge.

“Drs. Carmen Gonzalez and Karin Wiburg started the first cohort, and the recognition of NMSU’s online doctoral program is a manifestation of the years of work that professors, staff and, mostly, the graduate students have committed to continued professional development,” Rutledge said. “Furthermore, it is rewarding to be commended for providing a high quality learning experience that met students’ needs concurrently with their professional careers.”

The online doctoral program in Educational Leadership and Administration was ranked seventh by, which noted that the program includes in-depth coursework in educational law and policy. The opportunity for students to select a doctor of education or doctor of philosophy (with additional coursework) was considered a benefit of the program.

The Educational Leadership and Administration Program has an exceptionally devoted, student-centered faculty,” said Azadeh Osanloo, professor and interim co-chair of the School of Teacher Preparation Administration and Leadership. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work of the staff and faculty and our students, who are eager and open to be transformed into social justice scholars and practitioners.”
