ABIQUIU – There is a mystique to horses. Whatever the reason, horses hold a special place in the hearts of New Mexicans. Equine people can reach levels of loving, caring and nurturing with their animals that are generally reserved for family members.

The fourth annual Rio Chama Equine Expo on Saturday, Aug. 26, in Abiquiu at the Rio Arriba Rural Event Center is an opportunity for equine-loving people to learn about the many aspects of horse care, participate in fun competitions and network with others.

“It’s hard to believe we are having our fourth annual equine expo! We have come a long way,” said Donald Martinez, New Mexico State University College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences agricultural agent and county director of NMSU’s Cooperative Extension Service in Rio Arriba County.

“This is another great county event to engage horse enthusiasts of all ages to come learn from one another,” he said. “The lineup of presenters is awesome, truly professionals in their field. Best yet, this event is all educational and free.”

The day’s events will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration and a welcome from the Rio Arriba County Rodeo Royalty.

The morning will be filled with educational sessions including proper bit selection, pack-horse packing, horse health care, basic horsemanship and camping with horses.

After a lunch provided by the Rio Arriba County Farm and Livestock Bureau, there will be an All Age Hippology contest, horse judging for all ages and a tractor driving safety class.

Throughout the day there will be opportunities to meet former New Mexico State Fair Queen Cami Belcher, participate in kids dummy roping, watch a hoof trimming demonstration, learn about the U.S. Forest Service’s Wild Mustang Adoption Program and bid in a silent auction.

A wide variety of vendors will be showing their products.
