Learn about crops, grazing research and more at this year’s field day at the New Mexico State University Agricultural Science Center at Tucumcari Tuesday, Aug. 8.

This year’s event starts with a 2:45 p.m. registration for the afternoon program, which begins with two presentations at 3 p.m. Jerry Hawkes, agricultural economist and interim associate dean and director of academic programs for the NMSU College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, is the first presenter. He will discuss developing cost and return estimates for the Tucumcari Irrigation Project. Producers are encouraged to bring any production records they are willing to share for use in developing the cost and return estimates. Anonymity will be maintained.

Sal Lopez and Lee Gallegos of the New Mexico Workers Compensation Administration will talk about the changes in the workers’ compensation law regarding farms and ranches.

Led by NMSU faculty and students, the evening component of the field day will include presentations on these topics:
– Grazing research update (Brandon Meyerhoff, NMSU Animal and Range Sciences Department graduate student)
– Relay intercropping cover crops into corn or sorghum for fall forage (Leonard Lauriault, superintendent and forage crop management scientist at the NMSU Agricultural Science Center at Tucumcari)
– Strip tillage: Scope and opportunities (Murali Darapuneni, assistant professor of semi-arid cropping systems at Tucumcari)
– Blue corn selections for various beneficial traits (Randall Montgomery, NMSU Plant and Environmental Sciences Department graduate student)
– Resisting weed resistance (Leslie Beck, extension weed specialist)
– Tillage management systems for corn and cotton (Sifat Sultana, NMSU Plant and Environmental Sciences Department graduate student)

Registration for dinner and the evening program begins at 4:30 p.m. The pre-dinner speaker is Chad Smith, chief executive officer of New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau. Offered at no cost to attendees, the 5:30 p.m. dinner is sponsored by local businesses as a fundraiser for the Tumbleweeds 4-H Club from Logan, New Mexico.

“While we present information of value to farmers and ranchers, our field day is a family event,” said Lauriault.
