LOS LUNAS – With a $3.16 billion beef and dairy industry and an equine population exceeding 50,000, raising quality forage is an important part of New Mexico’s agricultural industry.

To help forage producers not only produce the best quality product, but to do so in a way that generates the maximum income possible from their land, New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service will present its seventh annual Forage Growers Workshop.

The workshop will be from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Valencia County at the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus, 280 La Entrada Road. Registration fee is $20, which includes lunch.

Rolando Flores, dean of NMSU’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, will be the keynote speaker to open the workshop at 8:30 a.m.

“It is imperative that we provide our producers with the most up-to-date information and tools necessary to continue providing our industry the highest quality product available,” said Newt McCarty, Valencia County Extension agricultural agent.

Presentation topics will include controlling weeds in alfalfa and cool season fescue, matching fertilizers with forage types to maximizing earning potential, identification and management of the white fringed beetle, pasture stand removal and establishment, forage quality and testing, and managing problematic weeds in pastures and range. 

In addition, representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture agencies will provide program updates and a demonstration of the Natural Resources Conservation Service rainfall simulator.

Pesticide applicators needing New Mexico Department of Agriculture continuing education units may earn five credits for attending the workshop. 

“This forage workshop is an excellent venue for all types of forage producers, both large and small, in New Mexico,” said Mark Marsalis, NMSU Extension forage specialist and superintendent of NMSU’s Agricultural Science Center at Los Lunas. 

“This program is diverse and is a great value. Popularity of the event is rapidly increasing, which speaks to the quality of information gained by the attendees,” Marsalis said.

The workshop is hosted by NMSU’s Valencia County Cooperative Extension Service, NMSU Extension Plant Sciences and the NMSU Small Farm and Ranch Task Force.
