ABIQUIU – Because of a large response from people interested in how to start a bee colony, New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service office in Rio Arriba County is hosting two-day workshop on beekeeping.

The workshop will be held twice, Tuesday and Thursday, May 24 and 26, and again on May 31 and June 2.

“Last year, our beekeeping classes where a huge hit, and the response for more classes has been phenomenal,” said Donald Martinez, Rio Arriba Extension agricultural agent. “We are fortunate to have a top-notch beekeeper from northern New Mexico to provide the training.”

Melanie Margarita Kirby has been keeping bees professionally for 19 years. “In my mind she is a jewel and great resource in Rio Arriba County,” Martinez said.

“Zia Queenbees provides pollination services, honeys and beeswax products, consilience research and survivor queen honeybee breeding following what they call ‘Father Time-tested, Mother Nature-approved regimen,’” Martinez said.

U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency now classifies bees as livestock, which means beekeepers may apply for federal assistance.

“This is another plus for people who are interested in establishing a bee colony on their property,” Martinez said.

The first day of the workshop will consist of classroom theory. The second day will be about how to set up a hive, and the equipment needed to begin beekeeping.

Each session will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The Tuesday session will be at the Rio Arriba County Extension office on State Road 544 in Abiquiu, with the Thursday session at NMSU’s Sustainable Agriculture Science Center at Alcalde, 371 County Road 40 in Alcalde.

Cost for the workshop will be $10 per person. RSVP by May 13 to the Rio Arriba County Extension office at 505-685-4523.
